Recipient Follow up
Canine Partners For Life has an extensive follow up/support program that is
one of the best in the industry. This program ensures the continued success
and independence of our teams. As an organization CPL is committed to supporting
our teams throughout the lifetime of their partnership, providing additional
training and guidance as the needs of each team change over time. Additionally,
CPL certifies each team using a two part performance exam just prior to graduation,
and then recertifies each team either annually or every two years depending
on their rating/status, for the lifetime of
the team. CPL also requires that each team complete a six
month follow up report to document the status of the team.
Quotes from CPL service dog teams:
"I think that the follow up program that
CPL requires is a wonderful tool to maintain the healthiest relationship between
dog, partner, and trainers. With the regular contact you never feel things
are out of control, and it keeps us recipients honest about the health of our
dogs and the work we have been doing to keep our skills sharp. This goes to
show that CPL produces strong and committed partnerships!" - Tracy
"One of the primary reasons I picked CPL for my service dog was their follow-up
program. They truly care for the dogs' health and treatment and can follow
this through the graduate support classes and the bi-yearly reports that get
filled out by the recipients. Thru their partnership you always have a trainer
or staff member available to answer questions of any kind. By phone, internet,
or in person, there is someone to help: and with their internet email group
you've also got other graduated teams to ask advice or questions also. I felt
well trained during the three weeks of team training but once home you will
always have new things to face as a team, and if you run into barriers, CPL
is there for you both." - Lori
Follow up schedule:
- New student has daily contact (phone, email, or in person) with their trainer
for the first week.
- New student then progresses to weekly contact for
the first month.
- New student then progresses to monthly contact for the first
six months
- New student speaks to their trainer and completes a written
follow up report twice a year for the lifetime of the team
CPL provides Graduate
Support Classes twice a month. These classes allow
students to come back to practice their skills and share their successes
with other graduates.
CPL provides an email list for CPL graduates to communicate with each
other and with their trainers.
CPL trainers are always available for guidance and will make home
visits with teams who require more extensive assistance.
