Novo Nordisk, Inc.
UPDATE
ON MARJORIE - Marjorie is now in the
CPL kennel in her second year of training to be a
service dog. She is doing very well and is learning
a lot of new skills. We hope to find a partner for
her so she can graduate in the Fall 2008 class.
Here is a photo of her in harness – you can see how happy she looks to be working!
We will keep you informed!
As a result of an educational demo delivered in 2006 to Novo Nordisk employees
in Princeton , NJ a sponsorship for our program has
evolved.
Marjorie is from our small CPL breeding program
and was born on 11/22/06. CPL is very
excited about this sponsorship, and Marjorie
will be making periodic trips to Princeton , NJ to
meet and greet the generous employees at Novo Nordisk.
The Legal, Quality and Government Affairs
Team of Novo Nordisk, Inc. has given us a grant
to sponsor a puppy in training, who was
named "Marjorie" by
Novo Nordisk.

Marjorie took the train to NYC to visit and support the Novo Nordisk
Changing Diabetes Bus World Tour and Village in Union Square Park . The bus, which has traveled all over the world to educate the public about diabetes, was in NYC to support the first United Nations sanctioned World Diabetes Day on November 14, 2007.

The Drug Information (DI) department had its first-ever
teambuilding event at Canine Partners
for Life (CPL) in
Cochranville , PA.
On a sunny morning
in early September, the team
boarded the A1 "camp
mobile" for
the two-hour trip from the home office.
Old movie trivia and prizes provided by Associate
Director Jill Webb made the long bus ride enjoyable.
Marjorie, the service-dog-in-training that Novo Nordisk
is sponsoring, boarded the bus for a special welcome
to her school.
The DI group then gathered
for a Lunch & Learn,
where Senior DI Scientist Salwa Fawzi
and DI Manager Mary St. Amour presented an in-depth
overview of diabetes and the different treatment
options.
The DI team learned that CPL employees have
very high standards
of care for the dogs, maintain immaculate kennels,
and provide plenty of play and "cuddle" time
for their canine residents. The DI group
completed the day by helping CPL prepare for its
open house event. In preparation for the facility's
annual fundraiser, cow bingo, the DI group helped
paint signs, set up tents, arrange seating, move
picnic tables, and did some light cleaning.
Overall,
this
event supported Novo Nordisk's commitment to the
Triple Bottom Line, helped strengthen the relationship
between
our organizations, and reinforced what we do best
- help others.
Photos will be posted
as Marjorie goes through
her training.
One of their employees, Pamela Morgan, was appointed
to our Board
of Directors
and we are thrilled to have her!

they are!

"Partners"
Oil on Canvas
16"x20"
by
Lori Levin
"To say I'm not thrilled with the finish
of this piece would be a lie. I always
have difficulty with patting myself on the back
because I always feel I could do better.
Not this time. However, I know this piece was not
totally in my hands. First, the good
people at Canine Partners for Life provided me with
an inspiring photo. Second, I constantly
felt divinely driven while painting and never felt
alone with this piece. Finally, this
piece has an important purpose and I felt certain
that the universe wouldn't allow this
to go wrong. So, this is a very proud moment for
me, I did my job well.
What excites me so much is that I feel the goal of this artwork has
been met. Let me tell you that this is a rare event.
My intention was to bring awareness
to the human-animal partnership and to show its beauty.
Many people have emailed me that
they would hang this painting in their homes and they
find it to be very beautiful
not just touching. I find this particularly interesting because
so many of us tend to avert our
eyes when we see someone in a wheelchair. We don't mean
to be rude but we often don't
want someone to see in our eyes what we feel. The presence
of a service dog does make us
more comfortable but we still tend to shy away. This painting
has the opposite effect. That
is what makes this a success in my eyes.
Also, I will be selling prints and cards of this piece and portions
of the proceeds will go to CPL. Stay tuned for
major happenings with Soulful
Studios like the launch of my new website as well as
dates for upcoming events where
you could meet me in person. Someone asked me why I chose this subject.
We've all heard my rants about
the goodness that comes from animals and humans partnering
together and my connection with
Canine Partners for Life. There is more to it. Many
years ago I used to take notes
for people taking college classes that for one reason or
another couldn't take the notes
themselves. At one point I worked for a guy my age who had an accident
that resulted in him being a
quadriplegic. Since he
had difficulty with his hands I scribbled class
notes for him. We became good friends.
One day he asked me to go with him to pick out a gift for his mother
at the mall. He has a specially equipped van that made it
possible for
him to drive. One would think that would give him great access to activities
we take for granted. It surprisingly did not. We
entered the mall
laughing only soon to be leaving in a foul mood. The isles were too
small for him to maneuver and many items were out of his
reach. He did
not want my help but wanted his independence. This brought me to great
awareness of what independence really means.
A service dog is certainly no replacement for one's own abilities
but they provide great opportunities
for an independent life. A dog
can do many things for someone that uses
a chair or that fatigues quickly or has
seizures that another human cannot do. A human "helps",
often
leaving the recipient feeling
like a burden. A dog is a partner that also depends on the human for
its care. A dog knows when you are upset
or frustrated and will comfort
you, so not only does it help with physical needs but emotional needs
as well. A dog is loyal to its human partner in a way that no two-legger
could be. This
is why I did this painting. This
is a tribute."
Portraits by
Soulful
Studios are much more than an accurate likeness but a true tribute
to the soul of your pet dog, cat, bird or horse. Lori Levin takes great pride
in creating more than just a beautiful pet portrait for her clients, she helps
people honor their living pets and immortalize those beloved companions that
have passed away. What drives her to do this? Animals offer so much to our
lives; this is her way of giving back to them.
