Purple Paw Novo Nordisk, Inc.

New Puppy Named by Novo Nordisk!
“APIS” the Golden Retriever puppy - a little dog with a big purpose.

Check out Apis's photos on Flickr! He's getting so big!

The Grants & Philanthropy and Quality Assurance teams of the LGQ Department at Novo Nordisk are once again sponsoring the training of a service dog. This pup is a male golden retriever, who will follow in the paw prints of their first sponsored service dog, Marjorie.

Apis is an unusual name but very fitting for a Novo dog - it is a tribute to the Novo Nordisk logo; the Apis Bull. It's been called a lot of things, from unusual to thought provoking. But one thing is for certain: since its adoption by Novo Nordisk's founders 80 years ago, the APIS bull logo has remained a strong and unique symbol of the company. The APIS bull originated as a sacred animal in ancient Egypt - worshipped as the living incarnation of the god Ptah, a "universal creator" and patron saint of craftsmen. "Novo Nordisk's logo is its most recognized symbol, not only representing our rich history of innovation, but the tremendous advancements we've made in changing diabetes," said Martin Soeters, President, Novo Nordisk. "The APIS bull is a popular and distinctive part of our culture, and one I believe will continue to be so in the years to come."

Apis has a lot of people watching his progress! He is learning a lot of cool stuff in his puppy home that he shares with three other dogs, two cats, three horses and a donkey. Apis spends a lot of time with his puppy raiser going into the city of Philadelphia for meetings, going to fundraising events, and having a great time every day learning new and exciting things. He attends puppy class twice a month and just passed his four month skills evaluation with an excellent rating!

In addition to his obedience training, Apis goes out to dinner with his puppy home, helps her grocery shop, he is a spectator at horse shows and events, he especially loves to go to Home Depot on the weekends, and he sleeps under her desk during the week while she is at work. Apis has another year and a half to go in his training, but he is doing great so far. Keep coming back for more photos and updates!

UPDATE ON MARJORIE - Marjorie is now in the CPL kennel in her second year of training to be a service dog. She is doing very well and is learning a lot of new skills. We hope to find a partner for her so she can graduate in the Fall 2008 class. Here is a photo of her in harness – you can see how happy she looks to be working! We will keep you informed! As a result of an educational demo delivered in 2006 to Novo Nordisk employees in Princeton , NJ a sponsorship for our program has evolved.

Marjorie is from our small CPL breeding program and was born on 11/22/06. CPL is very excited about this sponsorship, and Marjorie will be making periodic trips to Princeton , NJ to meet and greet the generous employees at Novo Nordisk. The Legal, Quality and Government Affairs Team of Novo Nordisk, Inc. has given us a grant to sponsor a puppy in training, who was named "Marjorie" by Novo Nordisk.

Marjorie took the train to NYC to visit and support the Novo Nordisk Changing Diabetes Bus World Tour and Village in Union Square Park . The bus, which has traveled all over the world to educate the public about diabetes, was in NYC to support the first United Nations sanctioned World Diabetes Day on November 14, 2007.

The Drug Information (DI) department had its first-ever teambuilding event at Canine Partners for Life (CPL) in
Cochranville , PA.

On a sunny morning in early September, the team boarded the A1 "camp mobile" for the two-hour trip from the home office. Old movie trivia and prizes provided by Associate Director Jill Webb made the long bus ride enjoyable. Marjorie, the service-dog-in-training that Novo Nordisk is sponsoring, boarded the bus for a special welcome to her school.

The DI group then gathered for a Lunch & Learn, where Senior DI Scientist Salwa Fawzi and DI Manager Mary St. Amour presented an in-depth overview of diabetes and the different treatment options.

The DI team learned that CPL employees have very high standards of care for the dogs, maintain immaculate kennels, and provide plenty of play and "cuddle" time for their canine residents. The DI group completed the day by helping CPL prepare for its open house event. In preparation for the facility's annual fundraiser, cow bingo, the DI group helped paint signs, set up tents, arrange seating, move picnic tables, and did some light cleaning.

Overall, this event supported Novo Nordisk's commitment to the Triple Bottom Line, helped strengthen the relationship between our organizations, and reinforced what we do best - help others.

Photos will be posted as Marjorie goes through her training. One of their employees, Pamela Morgan, was appointed to our Board of Directors and we are thrilled to have her! Please visit their website and see what an innovative company they are!

Purple Paw Immortalize Your Animal!

"Partners" Oil on Canvas 16"x20"
by Lori Levin

"To say I'm not thrilled with the finish of this piece would be a lie. I always have difficulty with patting myself on the back because I always feel I could do better. Not this time. However, I know this piece was not totally in my hands. First, the good people at Canine Partners for Life provided me with an inspiring photo. Second, I constantly felt divinely driven while painting and never felt alone with this piece. Finally, this piece has an important purpose and I felt certain that the universe wouldn't allow this to go wrong. So, this is a very proud moment for me, I did my job well.

What excites me so much is that I feel the goal of this artwork has been met. Let me tell you that this is a rare event. My intention was to bring awareness to the human-animal partnership and to show its beauty. Many people have emailed me that they would hang this painting in their homes and they find it to be very beautiful not just touching. I find this particularly interesting because so many of us tend to avert our eyes when we see someone in a wheelchair. We don't mean to be rude but we often don't want someone to see in our eyes what we feel. The presence of a service dog does make us more comfortable but we still tend to shy away. This painting has the opposite effect. That is what makes this a success in my eyes.

Also, I will be selling prints and cards of this piece and portions of the proceeds will go to CPL. Stay tuned for major happenings with Soulful Studios like the launch of my new website as well as dates for upcoming events where you could meet me in person. Someone asked me why I chose this subject. We've all heard my rants about the goodness that comes from animals and humans partnering together and my connection with Canine Partners for Life. There is more to it. Many years ago I used to take notes for people taking college classes that for one reason or another couldn't take the notes themselves. At one point I worked for a guy my age who had an accident that resulted in him being a quadriplegic. Since he had difficulty with his hands I scribbled class notes for him. We became good friends.

One day he asked me to go with him to pick out a gift for his mother at the mall. He has a specially equipped van that made it possible for him to drive. One would think that would give him great access to activities we take for granted. It surprisingly did not. We entered the mall laughing only soon to be leaving in a foul mood. The isles were too small for him to maneuver and many items were out of his reach. He did not want my help but wanted his independence. This brought me to great awareness of what independence really means.

A service dog is certainly no replacement for one's own abilities but they provide great opportunities for an independent life. A dog can do many things for someone that uses a chair or that fatigues quickly or has seizures that another human cannot do. A human "helps", often leaving the recipient feeling like a burden. A dog is a partner that also depends on the human for its care. A dog knows when you are upset or frustrated and will comfort you, so not only does it help with physical needs but emotional needs as well. A dog is loyal to its human partner in a way that no two-legger could be. This is why I did this painting. This is a tribute."

Portraits by Soulful Studios are much more than an accurate likeness but a true tribute to the soul of your pet dog, cat, bird or horse. Lori Levin takes great pride in creating more than just a beautiful pet portrait for her clients, she helps people honor their living pets and immortalize those beloved companions that have passed away. What drives her to do this? Animals offer so much to our lives; this is her way of giving back to them.

Purple Paw Hosts for Hospitals

The purpose of Hosts For Hospitals is to provide free lodging and support at volunteer-host homes as a caring response to the housing needs of patients and their families who come to the Greater Philadelphia area for specialized medical care.

Canine Partners For Life would like to commend Hosts For Hospitals for the support and assistance that they have given our service dog recipients over the past few years. Hosts for Hospitals has arranged 14 host family placements during the mandatory three weeks of training that they must attend with their dogs here at the CPL campus before returning home with their service dog.

Many of our recipients must fund raise funds to travel to CPL, pay for travel expenses for an aide or support person, and pay for lodging and food. A majority of our recipients have incomes of less than $8,000 a year so a hotel stay is out of the question. Many of theses recipients would not have been able to get a service dog from us unless this generous program was available to them. Hosts For Hosptials plays a huge part in helping us give the gift of independence to people with physical disabilities and seizure disorders. We make a great team!

Thanks to the many Hosts For Hospital host families, many of our recipients and their aides and support people have been able to come to CPL so that the recipient could get their service dog. We give all our recipients information about Hosts For Hospitals in their placement packages and everyone that has contacted the organization has been treated in the most professional manner.

Our recipients have all said that their host families make them feel extremely welcome and a part of their family. We wish Hosts For Hospitals continued success and we thank you so very much!
